AVG Free 8.5 - New Version

Presented by: Charlie Le Ber

This is a new version and you must install it to get the new features. It will not update from your daily virus database updates. It is a large file of 61 MB, available on the April club CD.

The new free version adds the LinkScanner which has two components:

Search-Shield - a safe search component that places safety ratings next to each link in Google, Yahoo! and MSN search results.

Active Surf-Shield - a safe surf component that scans the contents of a web site in real-time to ensure it's safe being opened. While browsing the Net, the Active-Surf-Shield protects you against any threats in the websites, even if the website is not known to be malicious, and its address is not yet blocked by Search-Shield.

You may install 8.5 by uninstalling 8.0 and then install 8.5. Use the method described on our website in Software. Scroll way down to find the recommended method. If you wish to install 8.5 over 8.0 you get this screen. USE THE OPTION "Add or remove components" NOT "Repair installation" or you will be in trouble.

When asked for "Component selection" ensure all boxes are checked so you get all the features.

You are asked if you wish the AVG Security bar. Uncheck this feature.

Unless you want the Yahoo Search, leave it unchecked.

When you use Google search to find websites you will see some buttons beside the searches. Red or green. Green is a reported "Safe" site, and Red is reported to be a "Dangerous" site.

If you click on a website that has a Red button you will get this warning. You can click your "Back" button or proceed and "click here" to go in the website. I tried this on several Red listed websites and got four Trojans on one. AVG quarantined them so I recovered.
