- There may have been program still running when you tried to shut it off.
Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar and then clicking Task Manager.
Click the Applications tab, click the program that is not responding, and then click End Task.
An emergency shut-off can be done by holding in the power-on button for 7 seconds. - A member forget the password to an old Wordperfect file. Can the file be opened in OpenOffice then transferred to MS Word?

- Would you recommend a dual boot setup when Windows 7 is to be installed on an XP machine?
- If you want a dual boot, your hard-drive will need another partition and a dual boot config installed.
You may want to have an experienced person or a computer shop do that.
Also you will need another purchase of MS Office or any other programs you want to have for each partition.
If you want to have only Windows 7, don't forget to save all your data, photos and contacts on a CD, DVD or an external hard drive first.
Before you do anything. run Windows 7 Up-grade Advisor to see which programs, printers and scanners etc. may not work in Windows 7.

- Run Windows 7 Up-grade Advisor.
It will identify any problems and advise you which up-grade you need.
When you install Windows 7 you will also have to install Windows Live Mail or another email service. You should save your contacts on a memory stick before the upgrade to Windows 8.
- If you email an OpenOffice document can the person receiving it open it if they do not have OpenOffice installed?
- No, it will not open.
When you save your Open Office document, Click 'Save as' and save as type Microsoft Word 7. Then the receiver can open it in MS Word. - Why does an ID User name have to be used now to access the Members Only area when it wasn't necessary in previous years?
- The Members Only part of our website contains meeting minutes and the forum. These are restricted to member's use only.
- Is it necessary to have SP3 on our XP computers and does it include everything that was on SP2?
- SP3 does include SP2.
- When SP3 first came out there were glitches and BCC told us not to install it until they were fixed up. At that time SP3 was large and took quite a while to download. BCC would put out a disc for our members. Was a disc ever made and distributed?
- BCC did make a disc and distributed it. Problems occurred when it was installed while other programs were
left running.
The correct procedure is given on the club's website in the Software section.
If you have a high-speed internet service, let MS automatic updates download and install it.
If you are on a dial internet service it will take a day or more to download.
NOTE: The MS support for SP2 on XP will end in June 2010 so if you have not installed SP3 you should do it. To get help go to our website, Members Only section and fill out a Help Form. - I get a message when trying to open an attachment on my email. "This file does not have a program associated....create an association in the folder options control panel."
- The attachment cannot find a program on your computer that it needs to open it.
Check the last three letters of the attachment (an extension). If it is PPS, it needs MS PowerPoint to open.
Click on Start/Control Panel/Folder options/File Types and scroll down the extensions until you see the one you want.
Beside it you want a program listed that can open it. You can click Change and find a program or if it is not there you need to install the program. - I lost my address book for Outlook Express.
How do I transfer the addresses from my Google address book to Outlook Express? - Open your Gmail account. Click on Contacts, then Export, then Everyone (all contacts).
Also click on Outlook CSV format, then Export, then Save to Desktop. Click Close.
The address book file is now named contacts.csv.
Open Outlook Express. Click on File, then Import Other Address Book. Click Text File (Comma Separated Values) and then Import.
Now click Browse and find the contacts.csv file you saved on the Desktop. Double Click on the file and then click Next. Now add or remove Text Fields you need and click Finish. - Is it possible to make one copy of a picture from a PPS slide show?
- Yes.
You can use FastStone Capture available from the club website or memory stick.
Install FastSone Capture.
Start the PowerPoint slide show and display the slide you want to copy.
Run the FastStone Capture program. There is a rectangular box on your screen. Under the words FastStone Capture there are some choices.
Click on the third one from the left. It is a dotted rectangle. You now have red crosshairs. Move the crosshairs to the upper left of the slide. Hold down the left mouse button and drag it to the lower right of the slide and then release the left mouse button.
Now click "Save As". In "Save as type" choose" JPEG Format". Click "Save" and save it in My Pictures.
