  1. How do you get the clock and calendar on your XP desktop?
    • Google “desktop gadgets for xp” Be very careful - some are resource hogs

  2. How to put your computer into hibernation? What are the steps to do this?
    • Click Start, Control Panel, Power Options and choose your options.

  3. Why are you using 'sleep or 'hibernation'?
Is it to save electricity? Is it for your desktop or laptop?
    • Tom uses sleep on laptop, doesn't’t use on desktop. Charlie doesn’t like to leave his computer unattended. If not using for awhile, he turns off the computer. Tom leaves his on 24/7 but does shut it down once a week.
What is the difference between ‘sleep mode’ and ‘hibernation’?
Sleep mode powers off the monitor to use minimal current, stopping the disk drives after copying the current state of your computer to the RAM. The RAM is saved by a small amount of current.
If you get a power drop during Standby mode, your unsaved work is lost. It is the most-used power saving mode.
Hibernation, if your system has it, copies your data to hard disk before going into a deep power saving. There is no power consumption because everything is turned off. It is slower to restart than Sleep as you have to wait for the disk drive to restore your data. Hibernate is useful on a laptop because it gives maximum power saving to your battery.
Sleep and Hibernate modes may not wake up correctly and can give problems.

  4. Why is it different and/or difficult to download software from the club’s website?
    • The website is presently changing. Links gave us trouble, and when downloading you could get a corrupted file. The club memory stick has what you need.

  5. Does anyone have experience with the Bell Internet Performance package? The member has a laptop with Windows 7. The package offers free security, spyware, anti-virus and firewall. Is it any good?
    • We are not sure what they offer, so we can’t comment. You can be well protected with the software the club has tested and recommended.

  6. A member can’t get rid of the question “Script error on Internet Express.” on his screen – it keeps coming back.
    • The problem could be there are things not loading properly, in the proper sequence. Also when you are accessing the website they could be doing something at the other end.
To fix this, go to Internet Options in Tools to disable script debugging.
In IE click Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and under Browsing ensure there is a check mark in the box 'Disable script debugging.' Click Apply and OK.

  7. A member has a problem updating Panda Cloud. They also get Pop ups from other antivirus sellers. Do you have to open an account if it is a free program?
    • It is free but for the new version they want you to register.

  8. Why does the club website not have member’s addresses and email anymore?
    • With the “Privacy of Information Act” we have to have signed permission from everyone. This is a huge administration job. Also, the information was rarely used.

  9. Do the programs on the club stick work on Apple?
    • Probably not, but versions for Mac are usually available.

  10. Any there any problems installing the new AVG?
    • No problems so far. Use revo uninstaller to uninstall programs. You can install version 9 over 8.

  11. A member has Vista on his laptop and has a Gmail account. On my Gmail account, when I tick “stay signed in”; it doesn’t work. I have to enter my address and password every time I open it.
    • Probably at some time you said “don’t keep me signed in on this site”.
Use CCleaner, to wipe out all your passwords, then in Gmail click on “stay signed in”. Then, in CCleaner remove the check mark on “cookies”
