  1. Previously had Yaknet, Coppernet and now have Cogeco. They have been deleted but when he want to send attachments the Yaknet comes up. It is deleted, but still something there.
    • Need to use REVO Uninstaller - Tom offered to look at problem if all else failed. Tom was contacted after the meeting.

  2. Member would like to contact "Picasa" directly to ask a question about their program. He wants to disable three features - Email, recently updated and people (the new face feature).
    • When in Picasa click on Tools, then Folder Manager and choose whether or not to have Picasa find pictures in the folders.

  3. My Dell Computer, Dimensions 3000 Series, new January 2005, has developed a sound which is much like a noisy cooling fan. Suggestions why?
    • There are usually two fans. One for the power supply and one for the processor. They are important so you should have the noisy one changed.
A noisy fan could also be due to dust & other grit accumulating on it. That is easy to clean for a desktop. You need to remove the cover, being careful to ground your hands and then blow the dust off using a special can of compressed air for cleaning computers. You can also see which fan is making the noise with the cover off. If the noise remains after the cleaning then replace the fan.

  4. Need help to get Panda Cloud new version registered.
    • Go to "create your free account here" and enter your email address and a password. Panda will send you a website address. You click on it to be registered. You now return and enter your email address and password. You may try to Enter "BrightonComputerClub@gmail.com", password "here"

  5. Is there a piece of free software to monitor the temp of your computer?
    • You could install Motherboard Monitor. Do not ask for proxy. You must choose your motherboard maker and model. May be difficult to do, perhaps Belarc Advisor can help. Download from http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311

  6. Laptop mouse does not work. I have a cordless keyboard & mouse. Keyboard works okay. Mouse diagnostics say "mouse working properly". I pushed "connect" button and changed batteries and uninstalled then reinstalled software ... mouse still not working.
    • Your mouse has died. Sometimes a $40 mouse does not last too long, the $100 ones have laser sensing and last much longer.

  7. Why does my desktop computer ask for updates when I chose to have them done automatically?
    • Probably has downloaded them but as a courtesy is asking if now is a good time to install the updates without interfering with what you are presently doing. Under Internet Options click "never dial a connection" and have your security level set at "medium".

  8. Member had problem with the Brighton website. It was timing out.
    • Usually it is the website that is slow because it is busy with many users surfing it.

  9. Member asked Tom to compare the Open Office software to the Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Main difference is "Open Office" is free, "Microsoft" is not. You can do just about anything with "Open Office" and there is a vast amount of support information. Tom particularly likes that you can open any kind of document while another is open Word, Excel.
      - Janice found that the "Presentation" part of Open Office lacks a few finesse details that Power Point has perfected but OO should improve as time goes on (i.e. using sound and animation do not perform upon clicking in OO). The Text part of OO has most functions that Word has, except OO slows occasionally when being used with many features opened and when text is added and changed a number of times. This too should be fixed over time.

  10. What is Irfanview?
    • It is an image handler, like Photoshop. Bruce likes Irfanview, he said it is a free program and it is an excellent viewer available on the club memory stick.

  11. Member frequently gets a message to download an update for Java Script. What is it?
    • It is in a lot of programs that we use. It is needed for some games to run and Federal Government websites require you to have Java to communicate with you. Click Start/Control Panel/Java ... Leave unchecked for "updates automatically". Every now and then go there in and click the button "update now".

  12. Member asked about a typing program, voice recognition.
    • Janice said she has worked with these programs and it takes a lot of time to train the software to recognize voice inflections. There are voice recognition programs in Windows (for free) and one called Dragon Naturally Speaking which is expensive and which does almost the same thing. Sony has a microphone that is voice activated but on checking it out, it only works for one person, it won't work if you wanted to use it for a group meeting.

  13. Member wants to go to Sony website, gets a Java language error ... do I need to update it? Member uses Firefox.
    • Click on Tools - Options - Content -Ensure that boxes are checked for Enable Java and Enable JavaScript . Update to the latest version of Java and latest version of Firefox.

  14. Cannot connect her printer to her brand new computer. It worked on Vista but won't work on my Windows 7, 64 bit computer.
    • Janice had a similar problem -- you need a new driver for your 64 bit computer so that your printer will work with Windows 7. You can run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, it scans your hardware to see what will work on Windows 7. Get it here...Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
