  1. Is someone able to explain the basic use of the microphone and speakers, recording etc. Nothing complicated, just general information?
    • Janice explained this and also how to record a message and say "save as" under sound files and then you can email it to someone as a wav file attachment. You should have 60 seconds to record your message or sing "Happy Birthday" or whatever message you wish to send.
You click on Start, then All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Sound Recorder. Then, with your microphone plugged into the Green receptacle, click on the red circle and record.
Here is the link to MS and more detailed instructions: Sound Recorder

  2. How do I find out if my present monitor is compatible with Windows 7? The new monitors on display all state "compatible with Windows 7".
    • Google "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor". Install and run. Have all your printers, scanners etc running. It tells you if your hardware and software is compatible with Windows 7.

  3. When I boot up how do I delete the boot option choice of OS:   A. Windows XP or  B. Ubuntu. I have deleted the entire Ubuntu system but the name still shows up with the opening choice. It is no problem but it just slows me down.
    • Right click on My Computer then select Properties. Now click on the Advanced tab.
In a section labelled Startup and Recovery click on the button labelled Settings. Uncheck "Time to display list of operating systems".
It will go to zero. Click Okay.

  4. How can I reduce the storage on the "D" drive on my computer? It is named FACTORY IMAGE and of 10.3 GB only 980 MB are free.
    • DO NOT remove or alter this partition. You need this to be able to reboot your computer if your Windows is inoperable.
This is your Recovery disk stored in the D partition. You must leave it alone. Tom asked if the member had made recovery discs? Suggested the member make a DVD to have as a backup.

  5. I have downloaded an 'xlr' file which contains names, phone numbers, addresses and email addresses and converted it to the 'cvs' and 'xls' spreadsheet format. How can I import the 154 names into my Outlook Express contact list?
    • You go to your xls spreadsheet and Save as a CSV file, (look at the bottom of the spreadsheet). Then Import into your address book as explained in previous meeting answers.

  6. Tom asked if anyone has an e-book reader?
    • It contains free books or books that are out of copyright. You can also get new books from authors who are willing to offer them for free. His reader can hold hundreds of e-books.
