Safe Summer Computing

    PROGRAMS YOU SHOULD HAVE

These programs are recommended by the club as minimum to ensure safe operation. They can be found on our website or on the club disk. They are all free.

  • - All of these programs should have a full scan run about once a week for active users.
  • - Update the program first, and then run as shown below.
  • - A full scan, scanning all your files, is the safest way to go. It takes extra time but is worth it. Load up your computer and then have a nap!
  • - Run only one Anti Virus program at a time.
  • - Run two or more Anti Spyware programs at a time. If you have Windows 98 or ME, run Ad-Aware and Spybot. If you have Windows XP add Windows Defender.

    AVG - Anti Virus
  • - Click “Update Manager”
  • - Click “Update”
  • - Click “Test Center”
  • - Click “Tests”
  • - Click “Complete Test Settings”
  • Ensure under “Scanning properties”, “Scan inside archives”, is checked.
  • Ensure under “File extensions”, “scan all files” is chosen

    Ad-Aware - Anti Spyware
  • - Click “Check for updates now”
  • - Click on the “gear” (Opens the Ad-Aware configuration window)
  • - Click on “Scanning”
  • - Ensure “Scan within archives” is checked
  • - “Under Memory & Registry”, ensure all are checked
  • - Click Proceed”
  • - Click “Start”
  • - Ensure “Perform full system scan” is chosen
  • - Click “Next”

    Spybot - Anti Spyware
  • - Click “Search for updates”
  • - Under Mode, chose “Advanced mode”
  • - Click on “Settings”
  • - Click on “Ignore Products”
  • - Ensure no product is checked. If checked it will not be detected as a problem.
  • - Click on “Ignore File Extensions”
  • - Ensure none are checked.
  • - Click on “+ Spybot-S&D”
  • - Click on “Check for Problems”

    Windows Defender - Anti Spyware for XP only
  • - Updated by MS along with your XP
  • - To force an update, Click on the symbol to the right of ? (Help options)
  • - Click on “About Windows Defender”
  • - Click on “Check for Updates”
  • - To run scan, click on symbol to the right of “Scan”
  • - Click on “Full Scan”

    OUTLOOK EXPRESS - Email options you should Use.
  • "Show preview pane", should not be checked. When you try to select an email for deletion, it opens instead, if you have "Show preview pane" checked.
  • Check to see if Outlook Express is set correctly...
  • - Click on "View", then "Layout"
  • - Ensure that under “Preview Pane”, “Show preview pane” is NOT checked.
  • When you first insall Outlook Express it has the preview pane checked. Turn it off!
  • Security with Email Attachments
  • - Click on “Tools”, “Options”, “Security”
  • - Ensure, “Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus”, is checked if you want this protection.
  • Note: You will not be able to receive some attachments that you may want, so you may wish to change it temporarily. You could unknowingly install a virus if left unchecked.
  • - BCC recipients, when sending an email, is a good option to keep spammers away and to give your email recipients privacy.
  • - Click on “Create”, “View”, “All Headers” Then you can use BCC.

    Weather Watcher Program
  • - Is a desktop weather station
  • - Automatically retrieves your local weather from the Internet and stores it in your Windows system tray
  • - Provides hourly and daily forecast
  • Just hover your pointer over the temperature in the Tray Icon to see the forecast.

  • Some Options to consider.
  • - Right click on Tray Icon
  • - Click on "Active City", then "Add City", type in "Brighton" and choose "Brighton Canada". Click "OK".
  • - Click on “General”, check all options except the last one.
  • - Click on “Conversion”, select Imperial or Metric
  • - Click on “Tray Icon”, make choices
  • - Click on “Tray Tooltip”, chose values, what you want to see on desktop
  • - Click on “Auto Update” chose “Forecast Auto Update Rate: Try “Every 5 minutes”.
