Tips on Better Surfing.

Charlie LeBer - As presented at the Dec 11th, 2007 meeting.

Why should we improve our Surfing?
  • To save time
  • No need to sort through non relevant results.
    Searching Words
  • One word - finds all pages with that word in them (Many hits)
  • Two or more words - finds all the pages with one or more of the words in them (Many hits)
  • Plus (+) sign in front of words - finds all the pages that have all of the words prefaced by the plus signs (Limits hits)
  • Words within quotes - finds all the pages with the words in the inverted commas together (Limits hits)
  • Minus (-) sign - will only find pages that do NOT contain the word or words prefaced by the minus sign (Limits hits)
    Some Examples of Searching Words
  • Let’s use this search….
  • We want to find recipes on Northern Spy apple pie.
  • I could start by typing the word "apple" into a Google search argument.

  • Then click on Search.

  • Notice the number of hits, 33 million of them.
  • Notice the apple we found is not the eating apple, it is Apple Computers, iPods etc.
  • We need to define our search better.
  • If we wanted to do a better search on Northern Spy apple pie, we could type in, apple +Northern Spy –iTune.
  • (This means, I am searching on the word apple, There has to be Northern Spy but no iTunes)

  • And then click Search.

  • This gives us about 100 thousand hits and is about Northern Spy apple pie
  • Try quotes. Type in Apple “Northern Spy”

  • And then click Search.

  • Notice the number of hits is about 20 thousand.
  • Add no iTunes , -iTunes to the search.

  • Notice there are 4,9290 hits now.

  • Add recipes into the search, +recipes

  • Now we have only 738 hits. Much improved. We started with 33 million.
  • If you don’t like to use + or – signs, you could try clicking on Advanced Search in Google
  • It may be easier to use, Go to Google Advanced Search

  • No need to use + or - signs

  • Enter the search words into the boxes…
  • With all the words………………....apple
  • With exact phrase……....................Northern Spy
  • With at least one of the words…….pie
  • Without the words…………………iPod
