Tuesday, 5th March, 2008 MEETING
Our Website is: http://brightoncomputerclub.org Our e-mail address for Meeting Questions is contact@brightoncomputerclub.org
Q. Member asked if Charlie would
review the method of accessing the Members Only page on our web site. A. The procedure was reviewed.
He also showed it is necessary to have internet options security set
a "medium" for it to work and be sure to click "apply".(Charlie
sent an Email to all members with the whole procedure.) Q. How to put a spread sheet from Quattro
Pro 3 into Excel? A. Later versions of Excel should import
Quattro Pro, with no problem, and will save as an Excel document. Second idea given by a member was to
"copy" and "paste" from the Quattro Pro to the Excel. Third idea is... When in Quattro Pro you
can save it as an Excel document. Click on "File". Click
"SaveAs" and click the down arrow beside "File type".
Scroll down and click on Microsoft Excel and then click on Save.
The Quattro Pro document will be saved as an Excel document. Q. E-mail from cogeco.ca - a member
received a new email address from a friend using Cogeco. They
are the only one who received the new email address, who cannot reply
to the address. What is the problem? A. Ensure there are not two addresses
in the address book. It could be picking up the old address.
Also check the address in the error message to see if there is a space
that shouldn't be there. Do not copy and paste in the address,
there could be hidden codes which will alter the address. Type in the
new address by hand. Q. Re: Spell Check in Outlook Express
- you can add words but is there a way to "take out" words? A. OE gets its dictionary from MS Word. Open up Word. Click on "Tools",
"Options", "Spelling and Grammar". Click on Custom Dictionaries. Click
on "Modify" Click on the word you wish to remove and click "Delete". Click "OK",
"OK", "OK". Gmail suggestions were offered: Charlie showed by going into Gmail what
is known as "threading" and how to reply to one or all of the e-mails
on display. Gmail will join together emails that are linked in
a conversation. You can archive the threaded email and when you
get another one to add on, it will come back to your Inbox with the
new message highlighted. You can forward the whole thread of emails
by clicking on "Forward all" to right of the thread. If you
wish to forward or delete only one of the messages in the thread, you
point to the message you wish and click on the down arrow beside "Reply"
and choose "Forward" or "Delete this message" When sending a G-mail the contact will
automatically be added to your Contacts list (address book), if it is
not there. Charlie demonstrated how to delete that contact from
your addresses if you wish. You click on "Contacts" then "All
Contacts" and position the pointer over the down arrow and clicking
to scroll through your contacts. When you see one without a name,
just the email address, it was probably added by Gmail, not you.
You can delete them. Click in the box beside the address and click
"Delete Contact" and click "OK". You can add a signature to the end of
your emails. You could use this to ask your contacts to switch
to your new Gmail address. When in Gmail click on "Settings"
and under "General" scroll down to "Signature" The default is
"No Signature". Click on the round button under "No Signature"
and type in your message. Scroll down to the bottom and click
on "Save Changes". If you do not want the signature on all
emails you are sending, you can delete it before sending. Q. How do you send out e-mails, to each
person separately or in groups? A. It would take too long to do each
one separately, and if sent as a large group the ISPs would call it
‘spam'. Charlie showed how he has set up the members in groups
of no larger than 40 people. In Gmail you click on "Contacts". Under the bolded word "Contacts"
there are two buttons. Click on the one with two heads. That brings up a box where you type the
name of the group you wish to make. Type in the name and click "OK". Click on "All Contacts" and click
in the box beside each contact you want in the group. Then click "Groups" and under "Add
to..." Click on the group you just added. Q. Member asked if AVG internet suite
was advisable. A. The club recommends the free version
of AVG anti virus program. The full version suite packages sometimes
overload the computer. If you have a powerful computer you may
not notice the load. The club recommends, AVG anti-virus free,
AdAware 2007 and Spybot, along with the Windows firewall. If you feel
you need extra security you could use either Sygate or ZoneAlarm firewall. It is important to keep these programs
up to date and run a scan at least once a week. Charlie Le Ber With thanks to Shirley Young who assisted
in the recording of the questions and answers. |
