- AVG has been advertising Version 8.0. Is 7.5 still the free version?
Answer:
- Yes, AVG 7.5 is the supported Free Version
- Version 8.0 is their latest "Commercial Version".
- You will probably find that when AVG nears release of Version 8.1, 8.5 or 9.0,
that a Free Version 8.0 will be announced.
- In the meantime, AVG has promised Full support of the Free Version 7.5
- Through Reach.net a friend has a malicious virus which sends out e-mails from her computer.
Computer Solutions can’t find it. Any suggestions?
Answer:
- We need the name of the virus to look for a fix.
- Another member commented that in the last few months their spam on
Reach.net has increased dramatically.
- There was a discussion on “white listing” or “safe listing” –
for approved people's email addresses to ensure that their mail arrives safely.
- It was suggested that those having problems with S*P*A*M, discuss it directly with Reach.net.
- One member pays 0.95$ a month to have Reach.net remove their S*P*A*M.
- Frank pointed out that Gmail does it for free.

- Can you have more than one type of e-mail? (Member has Xplornet Web-based email.)
Answer:
- Yes you can have your ISP supplied email(such as Sympatico, Reachnet, Xplornet) and a web based email
such as Gmail.
- One member commented that her HotMail white list had problems.
- Frank recommended they use Gmail.
- Why is Gmail better?
Answer:
- Gmail is the Google approach to email and chat.
- Practically unlimited free online storage allows you to collect all your messages
- Gmail's simple but very smart interface lets you find them precisely and see them
in context without effort.
- POP and powerful IMAP access bring Gmail to any email program or device.
- Gmail has the best S*P*A*M filtering on the internet.
Pros
- Gmail offers continuously growing storage, free IMAP or POP access and sending from any address
- Smart sorting, searching and starring let you find and organize emails and chat conversations
- Gmail's web interface is both fast and rich, comes with useful keyboard shortcuts
Cons
- Gmail does not support secure (signed and encrypted) email natively
- Rich HTML formatting does not support inline images and lacks an undo feature
- Gmail puts contextual advertising next to the emails you read.

- Re Filing Income Tax – using net file – is it secure?
Answer:
- Yes, very secure when you are filing personal information such as your taxes.
- It is suggested that you read the rules, etc. at the following site:
-
Canada Revenue Agency - Netfile Site.
- On-Line Security Note:
- In your web site window "http://" is the start of a normal address.
- If it starts with "https://" then you are on a secure site
- (the “s” means "secure".
- There should also be a closed yellow lock icon on the bottom right of that page.
- How do you get the “access code” for filing returns through Netfile?
Answer:
- Request from Revenue Canada.
- Some members said they didn’t request
it but are getting it automatically in the envelope sent to them from Revenue Canada.

- Member couldn’t read the address in the window to determine who sent the e-mail.
How can one improve that?
Answer:
- In Gmail, click on "Show Details"
- In Outlook Express, click the right mouse button on the email line in the InBox,
then click on "Properites", then click on "Detail" tab.
- How do I set up an email filter in Gmail?
Answer:
- To use the email filter effectively, it is better to have multiple labels (folders)
- To create a new label, click on "Edit Labels" at the bottom of your label box.
- In the new window of all your labels, go to the bottom and enter the new name in the
"Create a new label:" box and click "Create".
- To apply a color to the label, move your mouse to the right side of the label name
in the label box, when a small down arrow appears, click. You have a choice of 12
different colours.
- To apply a filter to your incoming email, you must have the full incoming email address.
- Click on "Show Details". Copy the full email address by holding down your mouse key and
dragging across the address (inside < >). When highlighted, press "Ctrl" and "C" keys.
- At the top of the screen, beside the "Search the Web" box, click on
Create a filter
- A small window appears. Click you cursor inside the "From:" box and press "Ctrl" and "V" keys.
- This places your copied email address in that box.
- Click "Next Step", and in the "Apply the label:" pull down, select your label.
- Click a check mark in the "Also apply filter" box, and click "Create Filter"
- Return to you "Inbox" after it shows you your new filter emails.
- You can modify these filters at any time by going to that filter screen.
- You can modify your labels by clicking on "Edit labels"
- Member hadn’t used her computer all winter, it said to download MSN messenger.
Has had problems since then reading e-mails properly. What to do?
Answer:
- Use Internet Explorer to get Hotmail, not MSN.
- The Club has a program on our CD called “Shoot the messenger”
– suggested that it would be good to install.

- Member noted that the club did not request automatic updates for AVG.
Answer:
- Charlie said that all updates on the club computer are turned off for
meetings because we do not need the interruptions.
- Member uses Gmail – however, when forwarding mail or composing mail –
he can’t read the suggested names because of the background colour.
Answer:
- Standard view and basic HTML view
- Standard view is what you'll see when you sign in to Gmail from a fully supported browser.
- In case you don't have access to a fully supported browser, they still want you to
have access to Gmail -- that's why they've developed a basic HTML view of their
service that's compatible with almost any browser.
- If you sign in to Gmail using a browser that isn't fully supported,
you'll automatically be directed to the basic HTML view.
- The basic HTML view is a little different from what you're used to because the
following features aren't available:
- Filter creation
- Spell checker
- Keyboard shortcuts
- Address auto-complete
- Custom From addresses
- If you need to access these features, please sign in to Gmail from a
fully supported browser, and make sure you have cookies and JavaScript enabled.
- If you're directed to the basic HTML view of Gmail, but would like to try using
the standard Gmail view, visit
http://mail.google.com/mail?nocheckbrowser.
- Keep in mind that standard view may not work, even with this link, if your browser
isn't supported.
- If this does not resolve the problem, contact Google through the Gmail Help page with
the following subject line: "Background transparency in Contact window when selecting
a Contact email address by entering an initial - text is not viewable - How can I correct this?"
- Member wants to stop message that you have a security problem.
Answer:
- Double click on the red shield icon in the notification area
- Click on Change the way Security Center alerts me.
- Under Alert Settings uncheck the alerts you do not want and click OK.
