Preamble before Questions and Answers.

Moderated by Frank Myers

Frank showed the Club’s website "Links" page.
To check it out, click: http://brightoncomputerclub.org/links.htm

An example he cited was the "Free Education Net" site.
To go directly to that site from the minutes, Click Here
As you will discover, there are 125 different courses listed, from "Aerodynamics, Fundamentals of" to "Windows XP, Fundamentals of". They are all available on-line and best of all, FREE!

Another favourite Link of Frank's is: "Tech Support's Best 46 Free Utitlies" and it's update: "Additional Best 46 Free Utilities" that can be found under the "Software-Related" heading. These are all available for download. When polled, Frank found that a handful of members had already taken avantage of this treasure-lode.

Frank also mentioned the addition to our May 2008 Club CD and the "Software" section of our web site, "AbiWord". This is a Free Word Processor that is totally compatible with "Mcrosoft Word". If you already have "MS Word" then installing "AbiWord" would be redundant. If you don't have "MS Word", try "AbiWord".

  7. Does XP SP3 work on all programs?

      Answer:

    • There are thousands of programs and hardware configurations.
    • It will take Microsoft and it's user community time to test all of these.
    • That is why we suggest you wait before installing it.
    • We are monitoring the situation and will advise.
    • When ready, Frank Myers will burn new copies of SP3 which will be available (at no charge) to members.

  8. How can I have two email addresses exactly the same, in Gmail?

      Answer:

    • No Internet Service Provider, or Internet Mail Service will allow two email addresses that are exactly the same. Some give the appearance that they do but it is actually handled by having sub names associated with a specific email address and if the sub name is not present then the email defaults to the unique name.
    • If you recall when you signed up for your email, Google would check to ensure that no other living soul had that exact email address.
    • The only way that email addresses work on the internet is because each and every one is totally unique.
    • This construction is "identifier" + "@" + "Service Provider".
    • For example"joeblow@sympatico.ca" is not the same as "joeblow@gmail.com"
    • If you and/or your partner require separate Google GMail addresses, then just sign up for another email address(as long as it is not exactly the same) It is free.
