- Click, Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, Programs Tab, and
under “Email” box, click the “v” (down arrow), and choose Outlook Express.
- Click “Apply” and click OK.
- NOTE: Be sure that you click Apply as this locks in the selection.

- Reading last meeting notification and looking for
‘delete’ vs ‘uninstall’. Where was that discussion? I can't find it in the reports of the meeting.
Answer:
- It is located on the front page of our web site under "Members' Comments".
- The first line is as follows:
- A question that is frequently asked by fellow members is:
"Why must one uninstall programs instead of just deleting them?"

- AVG 8 installs over 7.5 but now that I have AVG 8 can I
delete the old 7.5 icon?
Answer:
- Yes, you can delete the old 7.5 icon.
- Click the right mouse button on the 7.5 icon and select "delete" from the drop-down menu.
- To clean up the desktop I suggest
you have a folder on your desktop containing all your programs.
- You could have another folder containing all your games.

- Are the programs with icons on the desktop running?
Answer:
- No, but the ones represented by icons near the clock are running.

- Click, Start, Control Panel, Internet Options,
Programs Tab, and under “E-mail” click the “v”(down arrow)

- The icons for Mozilla or Firefox – can I delete these?
Answer:
- Yes, on the icon, click your right mouse button and select delete from dropdown menu.
- Remember, you are only deleting icons, not programs.
- If you want to remove programs, then you must use "Add or Remove Programs" from the "Control Panel"

- Any way to search for particular questions and answers
in the meeting reports?
Answer:
- No! I had a search engine on the original web site but there was no
way to put in security to protect "Members Only" data.
- I am currently working on a new version of the web site which will
include a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page which will be mainly
gleaned from all the questions asked at the meetings.
- This should resolve the problem.

- I have a PC and a laptop – I can check
e-mail on one computer and delete some – then use the other computer
– the ones I previously deleted have not been deleted there. Why?
Answer:
- Because you are deleting your emails on the physical computer and not
on the ISP (Internet Service Provider) server.
- When you check your email with the second computer, it downloads them
again, because they are still on the server and this other version
of Outlook Express has no record of downloading them yet.
- If you don't want to do that and want your emails deleted from the server,
check the presentation that Charlie did on Outlook Express to make the
correct option.
- If you are using two computers all the time, it would be to your
advantage to use internet mail where you have total control from each
computer without duplication.
- The free ones are: Yahoo, Google, HotMail, etc.

- Can’t find recycle bin icon?
Answer:
- There is a program "TweakUI" which should fix your settings.
- Click on the following connection if you want to download this free Microsoft program:
-
TweakUI for Windows XP.
- WARNING - This can be a very dangerous program - use with caution.

- Member wants to clean up the desktop like Frank Myers does.
How do you create a folder on the desktop and then put icons in that folder?
Answer:
- To create a folder on the desktop, click the right mouse button on a vacant part of the screen,
- Select "New", "Folder" from the dropdown menu.
- A folder will appear with the name "New Folder" highlighted - while it is highlighted, type in a
preferred name - I use "Programs" - and press the "Enter" key.
- To move any and all icons into this folder:
- Using your mouse, click the icon in question and keep holding the
left button down and drag it to the new folder then release the button.
- It’s now inside the folder.
- Repeat for all the other icons that you want inside this new folder.
- NOTE: I also have a folder called "Games" on my desktop - which I wish I could
get to more often....

- Member has a CD - "Speak Spanish". The sound on it -- sounds garbled.
How do I fix the sound?
Answer:
- Another member had the same problem and found he had two
different programs trying to fix the same problem.
- If that is not the situation, then the problem may be a corrupted
"codec".
- Search Google for a replacement for your "codec" or re-install the
Media Player that you are using for your Spanish lessons.
- If you are using Windows Media Player for example: In Google, enter:
- codec +spanish +"windows media player"
- NOTE: When searching in Google, everything inside quotes must be included in the search results.
The same applies to the word following a + sign. If more than one word is required, an
expression for example, then this expression should be inside quotes.

- Is there a way to lock your icons in a particular
position on the desktop?
Answer:
- On a blank part of your desktop screen:
- Right click. Arrange icons by "align to grid" or
- Right click, properties, appearance, desktop, icon spacing.
- Icons can also be adjusted in a folder.

- Advantage of storage of photos on DVD vs CD?
Answer:
- As far as storage durability, there is virtually no difference.
- However, DVDs are currently cheaper to buy than CDs because of higher competition.
- DVDs store 4.7 Gigabytes compared to CDs which store 0.7 Gigabytes.
- If you only have a CD R/W on your computer, it would be more economical to replace
it with a DVD R/W.
- NOTE: Be sure to store your CDs/DVDs out of the sun and away from heat, for long term storage.
Top of Page
- DVD’s that have a minus(-) or a plus(+).
What is the difference, what should I buy?
Answer:
- There are two different formats. Buy the DVD+R, some players don’t like DVD-R.

- If I have a CD burner and a DVD burner can
I just read a CD and burn it on the DVD?
Answer:
- If your source is on the CD and you want to create it on a DVD, any "Burner"
software program will acknowledge your two devices and YOU select the
input unit and the output unit.
- Charlie LeBer and I use AShampoo Burning Studio because of it's power and simplicity.
- Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 is available from the following VNUNET.COM for free:
-
Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.
- NOTE: If this site (VNUNET.COM) stops making this version available, I will move
it to our web site. Please let me know if this happens....

- Member uses new AVG 8 to scan her computer daily
– it does it in the background while she works on other things, like Word,
but it is very slow. Any suggestions?
Answer:
- Word is a huge program and there are other things running at the same
time also. Charlie LeBer suggests that you turn off daily scanning and do the AVG
scan manually once a week. Frank does the scan twice a month.
Top of Page
- Tried to set up the computer to do the
AVG 8 scan in the middle of the night then have the computer
shut off. It was still running in the morning. Another member
had the same problem but on the second try the computer did shut off.
Answer:
- Try shutting off all the other running programs as described in
earlier tip on how to stop all running programs.

- Has a CD reader on the computer, should I add DVD or replace?
Answer:
- If you want to copy a CD to another CD or to a
DVD you can use the CD reader for the source and burn to a DVD R/W disk drive.
- It is a good idea to add a DVD burner if there is room in your desktop.
- A CD can be read or burned in a DVD player.
Top of Page
- When burning a CD to a DVD what do I do?
Answer:
- Place the CD you want to copy, into the DVD Burner.
- Run your Burner software. It will recognize the CD.
- Select "Copy CD/DVD" from the choice of operations.
- The program will copy the contents of the CD to a temporary storage area on your hard drive.
- The program will ask you to insert a blank CD/DVD - remove the CD and insert a blank DVD.
- The program will write the contents of the CD (stored on the hard drive) onto the inserted DVD.
- When complete, the program will ask if you want to burn another copy. If you say no, it will
delete the temporaty area on the hard drive.

- What do all the terms mean? CD-RW, CD-R,
DVD-R or DVD+R. What should I use?
Answer:
- It means there are many media choices.
- DVDs hold much more and are cheaper.
- You need a DVD burner to write on CDs or DVDs but a CD burner will only write on CDs.
- Use DVDs for photos as they are cheaper than CDs and store over 6 times as much data.
- I recommend that you buy the DVD+Rs - they seem to be much more reliable and adaptable.
- If you have a CD burner and not a DVD burner just
buy CD-Rs, there are no + or – CDs. The - is to separate the CD and R.
- Members were advised to not finalize a DVD.
If you finalize you have locked it and you can’t add to it.
- The term RW for CDs and DVDs means Read/Write. These are reusable in that they can
be erased and used over and over. They are, therefore, more expensive.
- I personally, do not use RWs. DVDs are so cheap now that I can find no justification
for the more unreliable RW type discs.
Top of Page
- Member wants to put images on disc, can he add to it later?
Answer:
- If it is (R)read only and you finalize – it means you can’t add any more to it.
- On a (RW)read-write CD you can add to it even if you have finalized it.
- See 22 Question and Answer above.

- A member has CDs from his vacation at his son's in Australia which
worked in Australia but don’t work here. Is it because they weren't finalized?
Answer:
- What may have occurred is that the software that created the CDs used the Australian security
code on the contents that prevents a North American reader from opening the CDs.
- If this is the case, you may be out of luck locally and only your son can help you by finding
a way to re-create the CDs in Australia using the North American code.
- Suggest you try one on another computer.
- If it has the same problem, check with your son and see if he kept copies.
- If he did, ask him to finalize them and send you a new set.
- You could check with your son to find out the software that he used and use it here to see if
you can read the CDs. If you can do that, copy them on to local CDs with that software or
finalize the originals if you can.
- Failing that, then mail one of the CDs back to Australia
and have your son ‘finalize’ it or close it.
- If it works on return, then send him the rest to do the same.

- Have a CD-RW that has three or four files
of pictures. Can I add more pictures without losing the files
already there?
Answer:
- Yes, it will add in the vacant space – it won’t delete files to
make room for the new ones being added. It will not overwrite.
