Outlook Express and
Windows Live Mail Presentation
Why Consider Windows Live Mail?
- If you use Outlook Express to access Hotmail after June 30 it may not work.

If you have
- The word from MS is that Windows Live Mail will replace Outlook Express and Windows Mail.
- If you use OE or Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail is easy
Benefits of Windows Live Mail

- Gmail: You may prefer this interface
- Multi-line message lists, as in Outlook
- Emoticons in e-mails
- In-line spell checking
- Separate inbox folders for POP accounts
- Easily add photos and no advertising
Windows Live Mail install will
- Duplicate your OE email messages
- Duplicate your OE account settings
- Duplicate your OE email contacts, but you may need to import them to get the names.
- You can try it and if you don’t like it, uninstall.
Download Windows Live Mail from http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview


Choose save.

After the save is finished, find it and double click.

Now click Run.

Pick any or none. You could pick none and add later if desired.

Mail and Sign-in Assistant will install. Pick any others you
Want. Suggest you add them later.

Eventually you finish. Click on Start Mail.

Click Yes or No. If you click Yes, and find you do not want to use Windows Live Mail,
You can uninstall Windows Live Mail and Outlook Express will again be your default.
Looking at Windows Live Mail you see the two inboxes.
It has converted the OE that had both the
Accounts of the

The
arrow points to the Storage folders.
These are stored on your computer.
When
you receive emails
they are in the Inbox. You
can move them to the
Storage folders. You make new folders as you did
with OE.
The
folders under pop.gmail.com and post.kos.net are web-based. They are not
Stored
on your computer, so if you want emails in them stored on your computer, move
them. You can drag and drop or highlight
them and then click “Move to”.
First
thing to do after the install is to check your contacts to see if they were
converted from OE
correctly. All your contacts should have the name and the address.
Near
the bottom of the screen find “Contacts” and click on it.

It
should have all the names and addresses.
If you do not have the names
You
must delete the contacts in WLM and import them from your OE account.
To
delete them from WLM click on the contact and then click “Delete” If you click on the
first
Contact, then hold the “Shift” key, then hold the down key on the
keyboard, you will highlight all
Your contacts. Then click “Delete”.

Then
you import them.
To Import your email
addresses from OE
You
first Export them from OE.
Bring
up OE and click on “File”.


Click
Export

Type
in addresses and click Browse

Click
Desktop

Click
Save

Click
Next

Click
Finish

Click
OK

Click
Close
Now
you have the address book from OE on your desktop and now you
Can Import it into WLM.
In WLM click on “Contacts” .
Next click on the box to the left of the question mark.

And
then click on Import

on “Comma Separated Values (CSV.)

Click
Browse

Click
“Desktop” and then “addresses.csv”.
Click
“Open”, click “Next”.
Choose
the fields you wish to import and click “Finish”.
You
should now have your OE address Book in your
Contacts
list in WLM.
The
other setup you should do is to add a toolbar so WLM
Looks more like OE. On the top
near the question mark

Click
on the box and then click on Show all menus.
Lets create a new email.
Click
on New


This
is your new email. The same as OE but
with some added features.
You
can insert photos. Click on “Add
photos”.
You
will go to My Pictures. Click on the one
you want and click “Add” and “Done”.
As
you can see you can add a frame, a border, change their colors and even
autocorrect.
If
you want to add some Emoticons, click the smiley face.

Q:
Would you be able to stay off ‘live’ until ready to send your e-mail?
A: Yes, similar to Outlook Express.
It is flexible.
Q: Options -- Can you right click and get
properties on the emails?
A: Yes it works to same as OE.
Q: Any reason to have Windows Live Mail on
A: Yes a good reason. WLM is the replacement
for Windows Mail on
Q: Can you attach a spreadsheet in WLM?
A: Yes. All attachments work like OE.
Q: Member has
A: Yes. WLM is the Windows Mail
replacement.
Q: How do you set up the account in windows
live mail?
A: When you install WLM it will set up your
account from OE, automatically.
Q: With Windows Live Mail How to import
photos from Picasa or other similar program? Will
it work on all photo formats? When it installs, do you tell where the
photos are or does it find them?
A: WLM will work with all the formats that
worked with OE.
Q: With Windows Live Mail if you send
emoticons is everyone able to receive them in their e-mail?
A: Yes
Q: Are you happy with spam filtering in Windows
Live Mail?
A: Yes filtering is good. To get
the best spam filtering available today try Gmail or use WLM to access your
Gmail account.
Q: Will AVG check the e-mail in WLM?
A: Yes, it works well.
Q: Can I still use the chat?
A: Yes.
Q: If you have Gmail separate, you can add an
account in live mail.
A: Yes, the same as we reviewed, in a
previous presentation, with using OE to access Gmail.
Q: If you install WLM mail will
O.E. be deleted?
A: No, you can use either one but you should decide which you want to
use as when you download emails to one they will not
be available on the other.
Q: Will existing e-mails be transferred over?
Do you have a choice not to bring over?
A: Yes the emails will be duplicated from OE to WLM. No choice all will
be transferred and then you can delete what you don’t want.
