Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail Presentation

Why Consider Windows Live Mail?

-          If you use Outlook Express to access Hotmail after June 30 it may not work.

-          If you have Vista you have Windows Mail not Outlook Express.  Windows Mail has some shortcomings such as a failure to fill in the address when you make a new email.

-          The word from MS is that Windows Live Mail will replace Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

-          If you use OE or Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail is easy

Benefits of Windows Live Mail

-          Vista users:  Better than Windows Mail

-          Gmail: You may prefer this interface

-          Multi-line message lists, as in Outlook

-          Emoticons in e-mails

-          In-line spell checking

-          Separate inbox folders for POP accounts

-          Easily add photos and no advertising

Windows Live Mail install will

-          Duplicate your OE email messages

-          Duplicate your OE account settings

-          Duplicate your OE email contacts, but you may need to import them to get the names.

-           You can try it and if you don’t like it, uninstall.

Looking at Windows Live Mail you see the two inboxes.

It has converted the OE that had both the KOS and the Gmail

Accounts of the Brighton Computer Club.

The arrow points to the Storage folders.  These are stored on your computer.

When you receive emails  they are in the Inbox.  You can move them to the

Storage folders.  You make new folders as you did with OE.

The folders under pop.gmail.com and post.kos.net are web-based.  They are not

Stored on your computer, so if you want emails in them stored on your computer, move them.  You can drag and drop or highlight them and then click “Move to”.

First thing to do after the install is to check your contacts to see if they were converted from OE

correctly. All your contacts should have the name and the address.

Near the bottom of the screen find “Contacts” and click on it.

It should have all the names and addresses.  If you do not have the names

You must delete the contacts in WLM and import them from your OE account.

To delete them from WLM click on the contact and then click “Delete  If you click on the first

Contact, then hold the “Shift” key, then hold the down key on the keyboard, you will highlight all

Your contacts.  Then click “Delete”.

Then you import them.

To Import your email addresses from OE

You first Export them from OE.

Bring up OE and click on “File”.

Click Export

Type in addresses and click Browse

Click Desktop

Click Save

Click Next

Click Finish

Click OK

Click Close

Now you have the address book from OE on your desktop and now you

Can Import it into WLM.

In  WLM click on “Contacts” .

Next click on the box to the left of the question mark.

And then click on Import

Click on “Comma Separated Values (CSV.)

Click Browse

Click “Desktop” and then “addresses.csv”.

Click “Open”, click “Next”.

Choose the fields you wish to import and click “Finish”.

You should now have your OE address Book in your

Contacts list in WLM.

The other setup you should do is to add a toolbar so WLM

Looks more like OE.  On the top near the question mark

Click on the box and then click on Show all menus.

Lets create a new email.

Click on New

This is your new email.  The same as OE but with some added features.

You can insert photos.  Click on “Add photos”.

You will go to My Pictures.  Click on the one you want and click “Add” and “Done”.

As you can see you can add a frame, a border, change their colors and even autocorrect.

If you want to add some Emoticons, click the smiley face.
