Moving Multiple Files

Applies to: Win XP Win 2000 Win Me Win 98 Win 95

PREAMBLE:
This tip applies to a group of individual files located inside a folder. If you want to move a complete folder of files, just click your right mouse button on the folder, select Copy; go to the area that you want to move the folder to and right click your mouse button and select Paste. This will move a copy of the folder. If you want to delete the original , go back and click the right mouse button on it and select Delete.

Multiple Files:

  1. Locate the group of files within a folder that you wish to move.
  2. Highlight the icon representing the first file by clicking left mouse button.
  3. Hold down your Ctrl key.
  4. Carefully, highlight each of the remaining files.
  5. Release your Ctrl key.
  6. Move the mouse pointer over one of the highlighted file icons and click the right mouse button.
  7. Select Copy from the drop-down menu.
  8. Go to the folder that will receive the group of files.
  9. Click the right mouse button on a blank area of the folder window.
  10. Select Paste from the drop-down menu.
  11. Wait until they have all been copied.

NOTE: To delete the files in the original folder, repeat steps 1 to 6 above, then do Step 7 as follows: Select Delete from the drop-down menu.

Someone will say why not just select 'Cut' from the drop-down menu in Step 7 when doing it the first time....well, you can, but if something goes wrong between the cutting and the pasteing, you could very well lose the files because you have in effect, deleted them before you moved them. My way is a little longer, but safer.
